02 Why an RD A licensed clinician

What a Registered Dietitian brings that an app can't.

A licensed clinician, not an algorithm

Registered Dietitians complete accredited academic training, supervised practice hours and a national credentialing examination, and maintain continuing education to keep their credential.

Nutrition is the whole job

Your prescriber has minutes per visit and a medication to manage. A dietitian's entire focus is what you eat, how you tolerate it, and how to keep it working for you.

Care that adapts

Your plan is reviewed as your dose, appetite and goals change — rather than being written once and left alone.

Sustayn Health provides nutrition care only. We do not prescribe or manage GLP-1 medications. Your prescribing clinician remains responsible for your medication and overall medical care.

03 The care Visit by visit

What working with a Sustayn dietitian actually looks like.

Not a questionnaire and a PDF. A conversation with a clinician who reads what you sent, remembers what you said last time, and changes the plan when your dose changes.

Your first visit

Assessment and a plan you can start this week

Your dietitian has already read your intake before you join the call, so the time goes on you rather than on paperwork. You will talk through your medication schedule, how your appetite has actually changed, what you are able to eat right now, what has stopped appealing, and what a realistic week looks like.

  • A daily protein target set for your body and your activity
  • A daily fluid target you can actually meet
  • A short list of default meals for good days and difficult days
  • A clear answer on whether supplements are relevant to you yet
  • One or two things to change first — not fifteen
Follow-up visits

Adjusting as your dose and your appetite move

Appetite and tolerance rarely hold still, particularly around a dose increase. Follow-ups exist to catch what has drifted: protein slipping, fluid dropping, a food that has stopped working, energy that has fallen further than expected.

  • Review of what you have actually been eating, not what you meant to
  • Targets adjusted for your current dose and weight
  • Practical fixes for whatever is getting in the way this month
  • Supplements added, changed or stopped based on your intake
  • Anything medical routed back to your prescribing clinician
Between visits

Somewhere to put the question you have on a Tuesday

Most of the difficulty on a GLP-1 does not arrive on an appointment day. Secure messaging means the question you have mid-week goes to the person who knows your plan, instead of to a search engine.

  • Secure messaging with your care team
  • Member resource library with the practical guides
  • Supplement shipments arriving on a predictable cycle
  • A record of your plan you can bring to your physician
04 Scope Who does what

What your dietitian does — and what stays with your physician.

Your Sustayn dietitian

  • Assesses what you are eating and where it falls short
  • Sets your protein, fluid and overall intake targets
  • Builds a nutrition plan around your medication schedule
  • Works through nutrition-related symptoms: nausea, early fullness, constipation, food aversion
  • Guides muscle-supportive nutrition and movement
  • Recommends, adjusts or stops supplements based on your intake
  • Plans for weight maintenance before you need it

Your prescribing clinician

  • Prescribes and manages your GLP-1 medication
  • Decides your dose and when it changes
  • Manages side effects that need medical treatment
  • Orders and interprets laboratory work
  • Diagnoses and treats medical conditions
  • Decides when to pause or stop medication

Sustayn Health provides nutrition care only. We do not prescribe or manage GLP-1 medications. Your prescribing clinician remains responsible for your medication and your overall medical care.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What Sustayn does, what it deliberately doesn't do, and how the membership works.

01 The Program 2 questions

The Program

What is Sustayn?

Sustayn Health is a Registered Dietitian-led nutrition and supplement membership for people on a GLP-1 weight-loss journey. You get virtual visits with a Registered Dietitian, a nutrition plan built around your medication and your life, ongoing guidance and accountability, and — on the Plus and Complete memberships — supplements selected to complement that plan. Your physician manages your medication; Sustayn helps you manage the nutrition that goes with it.

Are the appointments virtual?

Yes. All visits are virtual and can be joined from a phone, tablet or computer. Appointments, intake forms and clinical notes are handled in a secure, HIPAA-compliant patient platform, separate from this website.

02 Eligibility & Access 3 questions

Eligibility & Access

Do I need a referral?

No. Anyone can enrol directly, and the care is identical either way. A referral code does two things: it tells us which practice sent you, and it applies the referred rate — $20 a month less on every plan and both terms, for as long as your membership stays active.

Do I have to be taking a GLP-1 medication?

No. The programme is designed around the nutrition challenges that come with GLP-1 therapy, and most members are on or starting a medication. But you are welcome if you are considering one, between medications, or working on weight maintenance after stopping. Your dietitian will tailor the plan to where you actually are.

Can I use Sustayn if my doctor isn't a partner?

Yes. Sustayn is available directly to you regardless of where you get your prescription or whether your practice has any relationship with us. If you would like us to share information with your clinician, you can authorise that through the patient platform.

03 Membership & Billing 3 questions

Membership & Billing

Can I change my membership?

Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade from your member account at any time. Changes take effect on your next billing date, and your supplement shipment adjusts to match your new tier.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, and there is no annual contract either way. On the month-to-month term you can cancel from your first month. On the 3-month plan you can cancel once your initial three months are complete — and after that you keep the same rate, with no second term to sign. Cancel from your member account or by contacting support; your access continues through the end of the period you have already paid for.

How does billing work?

Your membership is a recurring subscription that renews automatically until you cancel. You will see the amount, the billing interval and the renewal date before you confirm at checkout, in your confirmation email, and any time you open your member account.

04 Supplements & Delivery 2 questions

Supplements & Delivery

Are supplements included?

Yes. Supplements are included with every Sustayn Health membership package — Essential, Plus, and Complete. Your supplement plan is personalized based on your individual needs and your registered dietitian’s recommendations. Supplements are always optional and are intended to complement your nutrition plan, not replace food.

When will my supplements arrive?

Shipments are prepared on a monthly cycle tied to your billing date. You will receive a shipping confirmation with tracking by email, and you can see shipment status in your member account at any time.

05 Medical Boundaries 4 questions

Medical Boundaries

Can Sustayn prescribe my GLP-1 medication?

No. Sustayn Health does not prescribe, dispense or manage GLP-1 medications, and we are not a telehealth prescribing service. Your prescription is between you and your prescribing clinician.

Does Sustayn replace my physician?

No. Sustayn does not replace your physician or any part of your medical care. We provide nutrition support that works alongside your existing care team. Anything relating to your medication, dosing, side effects or medical conditions should go to your prescribing clinician.

What happens to my health information?

This website collects only what is needed to create your account, take payment and manage your subscription. Health intake, clinical questionnaires, appointments, clinical notes and messages with your care team all happen inside a separate HIPAA-compliant patient platform — detailed health information is deliberately kept out of the public e-commerce site.

Will Sustayn tell me to stop my medication?

No. Decisions about starting, adjusting or stopping medication belong to you and your prescribing clinician. If your dietitian notices something that warrants a medical conversation, they will encourage you to raise it with your prescriber.

What Sustayn does

Your physician manages the medication. Sustayn helps manage the nutrition surrounding it.

GLP-1 medications may reduce appetite, change food tolerance and cause gastrointestinal symptoms. When intake drops or weight changes quickly, meeting protein, fiber, fluid, vitamin and mineral needs can become more difficult. Sustayn provides individualized nutrition support to help you navigate those challenges and build habits for long-term health and weight management.

What Sustayn is

  • Registered Dietitian-led GLP-1 nutrition care
  • Personalized nutrition goals and ongoing support
  • Strategies for adequate nutrition, muscle preservation and symptom management
  • Carefully selected supplements used to support — not replace — food
  • A long-term approach to health and weight management

What Sustayn is not

  • Not a GLP-1 prescriber or telehealth medication service
  • Not a replacement for your physician or care team
  • Not a stack of supplements sold without context
  • Not a crash diet, meal-replacement plan or challenge
Why nutrition support matters on a GLP-1

When appetite changes, nutrition deserves attention.

Reduced appetite, gastrointestinal symptoms and rapid weight loss can make it harder to meet your individual nutrition needs. Your dietitian helps you identify what matters for you.

Food intake falls, often sharply

For many people portions drop by a third or more within weeks and stay there. That is the medication working — and the reason everything else on this list matters.

Protein is usually the first thing to slip

Dense, chewy, protein-rich foods tend to stop appealing before soft and sweet ones do. Protein is also the hardest nutrient to make up later in the week.

Vitamins and minerals travel with food

When the volume of food falls and stays low for months, the amount of everything arriving with it falls too. A smaller plate has to work roughly twice as hard.

Thirst cues fade alongside hunger cues

A surprising amount of daily fluid normally arrives inside food. Reduced intake plus a blunted thirst signal is how dehydration creeps in unnoticed.

GI symptoms get in the way of eating well

Nausea, constipation, reflux and early fullness are among the most common reasons people struggle to stay consistent with a plan.

Lean mass can come off with the fat

Any significant weight loss can include a loss of lean mass. Adequate protein and resistance training are the two levers most consistently associated with supporting it.

What Sustayn does

What Sustayn helps you protect

Stay Nourished

Help meet protein, vitamin, mineral, fiber and hydration needs when appetite and food intake decrease.

Preserve Muscle

Individualized protein goals and nutrition strategies that support strength and lean mass during weight loss.

Manage Symptoms

Practical nutrition strategies for nausea, constipation, diarrhea, reflux, early fullness and food aversions.

Support Long-Term Health

Build an eating pattern that supports metabolic health, strength, adequate nutrition and overall well-being — not just weight loss.

Sustayn Your Progress

Develop habits and structure that support long-term weight management as medications, doses and goals change.

These aren't steps. They happen together.

Supplements

Nutrition first. Supplements where they make sense.

Sustayn is a dietitian-led programme that includes supplements — not a supplement company with a dietitian attached. Every plan starts with what you eat: enough protein, enough fluid, enough of the nutrients that get harder to reach when portions shrink. Sustayn products are designed to help support the common areas of need when food intake is reduced.

Personalized Supplement Support Included

Your Sustayn membership includes nutrition supplements selected to support your individual needs. Your Registered Dietitian will review your diet, symptoms, health history and goals with you and recommend the Sustayn products that best complement your nutrition plan. Your supplement package can be adjusted as your needs change.

Food first → assess the gaps → supplement appropriately → reassess as you change.

04 Billing No surprises

How the subscription works.

What is the difference between the 3-month plan and month to month?

Price and notice, nothing else. The care is identical. The 3-month plan is $10 a month cheaper and asks you to stay for three months. Month to month costs $10 more and you can cancel from your first month. Both are billed monthly.

Am I locked in for longer than three months?

No. Three months is a minimum, not a recurring contract. Once you have completed it you keep the same rate and can cancel any month — there is no second term to sign and no price increase at the end.

What is the $29.99 registration fee?

A single charge at signup that covers setting up your account, your intake paperwork and scheduling your 60-minute initial visit with your dietitian. It is charged once, on every plan and both terms, and never again. It is separate from your first monthly payment, and you will see both amounts before you confirm.

What is the provider-referred price?

If a participating clinician referred you — through their QR code, their referral link, or a code you enter yourself — your membership is $20 a month less on every tier and both terms. It applies for as long as your membership stays active. The two discounts stack: on a 3-month Essential plan, a referred member pays $99 rather than $129.

Is this a recurring subscription?

Yes. Sustayn memberships are billed monthly and renew automatically until you cancel. You will see the renewal date and amount before you confirm, and again in your member account.

Can I change plans later?

Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time from your member account. Changes take effect at your next billing date, and your supplement plan is reviewed with your dietitian when you move. Switching between the 3-month and month-to-month terms takes effect at your next renewal.

Do you offer annual billing?

Not at this time. Memberships are billed monthly so that you are never paying ahead for support you have not yet used.

How do I cancel?

From your member account, or by contacting support. On the month-to-month term you can cancel from your first month. On the 3-month plan you can cancel once your initial three months are complete. Either way your membership stays active through the end of the period you have already paid for.

This is a recurring subscription. Sustayn memberships renew automatically each billing period until you cancel. You'll see the exact amount and renewal date before you confirm at checkout, in your confirmation email, and any time you open your member account.

For Providers

Give Your GLP‑1 Patients the Nutrition Support They Need

Give patients access to a Registered Dietitian without adding staff, appointments or nutrition counseling to your practice.

What you can tell a patient in ten seconds

“I work with a nutrition program specifically for my GLP-1 patients. With my referral it's $159.99 a month, and that includes an initial hour with a Registered Dietitian, ongoing access to the dietitian, and personalized nutrition support.”

$159.99/month is the provider-referred rate on Sustayn Essential with the 3-month plan. Without a referral it is $179.99, and month to month adds $10. A one-time $29.99 registration fee applies to everyone.

01 The problem Where practices run out of time

The prescription is the easy part.

Patients leave with a medication and a list of things they should be doing: eat enough protein, stay hydrated, keep moving, manage the GI side effects, don't lose muscle. Reinforcing all of that takes time most practices don't have, and hiring a Registered Dietitian isn't practical for everyone.

You prescribe and manage the medication. Sustayn manages the nutrition-support component — Registered Dietitian-led, fully virtual, and built to reinforce what you already tell your patients.

Virtual follow-up

Visits happen on the patient's schedule, from home, without adding appointments to your calendar.

Reinforces your recommendations

Protein, hydration, movement and realistic expectations — repeated and made practical between your visits.

Ongoing accountability for patients

Regular contact between medication visits, when adherence and tolerance issues usually surface.

Support for protein intake and nutrition

Individualised protein targets and practical strategies for patients whose appetite has dropped sharply.

04 Questions Five answers

What practices ask us.

What does it cost my practice?

Nothing. There is no fee to refer patients and no fee to be listed as a partner practice.

Is there any compensation for referrals?

Not to you. Sustayn does not offer payment, discounts or any other remuneration to providers in exchange for patient referrals, and never will without prior legal review. The referral does carry a benefit — but it goes to the patient, not the practice: referred members pay $20 a month less than they otherwise would. Your referral code exists so that discount can be applied and so we can report back on how patients found us.

What do I have to manage after I refer?

Nothing on the nutrition side. You continue managing the medication and the patient's medical care. Sustayn handles nutrition assessment, planning, follow-up and supplement fulfilment.

Will I get information back about my patients?

Only with the patient's authorisation. Clinical information is exchanged through our HIPAA-compliant patient platform, and only where the patient has consented to it.

How do I get materials for my office?

Request provider materials and we will send a partner pack — QR cards, waiting-room material and a short explainer your staff can use.

On referral compensation Sustayn does not offer payment or any other remuneration in exchange for patient referrals. Referral codes exist for attribution and reporting only. Any future partnership or incentive structure would be designed and reviewed with qualified healthcare counsel before implementation.

Your patients are already asking what to eat.

Give them a Registered Dietitian-led answer without adding a single appointment to your calendar.

Constipation on GLP-1 Medications: A Nutrition Approach

One of the most common day-to-day complaints, and one where fibre, fluid and routine genuinely help. What to try, and when to call your clinician.

5 min read Updated February 4, 2026 By Sustayn Health

Constipation is one of the most frequently reported nuisances on GLP-1 therapy, and it has a fairly intuitive explanation: you are eating less food, drinking less fluid, and digestion is moving more slowly. Less in, slower through, less out.

The three nutrition levers

Fibre

Fibre intake usually falls automatically when portions shrink — fruit, vegetables, legumes and whole grains are often the first things crowded out by a protein-first plate. Rebuilding it gradually, from food where possible, is generally better tolerated than a sudden jump.

Fluid

Fibre without adequate fluid can make things worse rather than better. The two go together, and both tend to drop at the same time on a GLP-1.

Routine

Regular eating times, regular movement and not routinely ignoring the urge all support normal bowel function. Gentle daily walking is a reasonable and low-risk place to start.

Go slowly with fibreIncreasing fibre quickly — especially with a slowed digestive system — can cause bloating, cramping and discomfort. Build up over a couple of weeks and increase fluid at the same time.

Practical additions

  • Add one fibre-containing food to a meal you already eat rather than redesigning your day
  • Include a mix of fibre types — vegetables, fruit with skin where tolerated, legumes, oats, seeds
  • Pair every fibre increase with a matching increase in fluid
  • Keep meals at broadly consistent times
  • Build in daily movement, even briefly

When it's not a nutrition question

Contact your prescribing clinician if constipation is severe or persistent, if you have significant abdominal pain, vomiting, no bowel movement for an extended period, blood, or unexplained changes in your symptoms. Do not start laxatives, fibre supplements or any over-the-counter product without checking with your clinician or pharmacist first — particularly alongside prescription medication.

The bottom line

Fibre, fluid and routine are the nutrition levers, and they work best applied together and gradually. Anything severe, painful or persistent is a conversation with your prescriber, not something to manage from an article.

GLP-1 Basics

Do You Need Supplements While Taking a GLP-1?

An honest look at where supplements fit — what they can reasonably do when intake drops, and what they cannot substitute for.

6 min read Updated February 25, 2026 By Sustayn Health

The honest answer is: it depends on what your food is already doing, and nobody can tell you without looking at that first. Which is inconvenient, because it doesn't fit on a product label.

The case for paying attention

Vitamins and minerals arrive with food. When the volume of food falls substantially — and stays down for months — the amount of everything that travels with it falls too. That is a reasonable basis for checking whether your intake still covers your needs. It is not, by itself, a reason to buy a shelf of bottles.

What supplements can reasonably do

  • Close a specific, identified gap between what you need and what you are eating
  • Make a target more achievable — for example, protein on days when food is difficult
  • Provide a consistent baseline where diet is genuinely variable

What they cannot do

  • Replace the protein, fibre and overall structure of real meals
  • Compensate for an intake that is far too low overall
  • Substitute for resistance training when the goal is preserving muscle
  • Diagnose or treat a deficiency — that requires clinical assessment
Food first is not a sloganIt is the sequence. Assess what you're eating, fix what can be fixed with food, then use supplements to cover what remains. Reversing that order means buying products for problems you may not have while missing the ones you do.

Safety matters more than usual here

Supplements interact with medications, with each other, and with existing conditions. More is not better — several nutrients have upper limits where excess causes harm. Anyone taking prescription medication, pregnant or breastfeeding, or living with kidney, liver, cardiac or thyroid conditions should review every supplement with their prescribing clinician and pharmacist before starting it.

How Sustayn approaches it

Your dietitian looks at what you are actually eating first. Supplements included with your membership are positioned to complement that plan and fill the gaps identified in it — they are a component of the programme, not the point of it. They are also always optional.

The bottom line

Reduced intake is a legitimate reason to look closely at nutrient adequacy. It is not a reason to self-prescribe. Get an assessment, then supplement the gap that assessment finds.

How Much Should I Eat If I'm Not Hungry?

When hunger stops being a useful signal, structure has to take its place. A practical framework for eating enough without eating by feel.

6 min read Updated January 21, 2026 By Sustayn Health

It is a strange problem to have. For years the difficulty was eating less; now the difficulty is eating at all. Many people on GLP-1 medications describe going most of a day without a hunger signal, then realising at 9pm that they've eaten a yoghurt and half a sandwich.

Hunger is no longer your measuring instrument

The medication works in part by blunting appetite signalling. That means the cue you have used your whole life to decide when and how much to eat has been deliberately turned down. Waiting to feel hungry is no longer a reliable way to get what you need.

The replacement is structure: eating on a schedule, to a plan, in amounts decided in advance rather than in the moment.

A workable framework

  1. Anchor three eating occasions. Set rough times rather than waiting for a cue. They can be small.
  2. Give each one a protein anchor. Decide the protein component first; everything else is built around it.
  3. Add a nutrient-dense extra. Vegetables, fruit, dairy, legumes, whole grains — whatever you tolerate that day.
  4. Keep two 'minimum days' in your pocket. Two specific, easy combinations you can manage even when nothing appeals.
  5. Track for a short window, not forever. A few days of honest recording tells you and your dietitian more than months of guessing.

Small plates still need to be good plates

If your total intake has halved, the nutritional quality of what remains matters roughly twice as much. The same 400 calories can be a protein-containing meal with vegetables, or it can be a pastry. Both are fine occasionally; only one of them is a foundation.

Don't restrict on top of restrictionA common mistake is layering an old diet on top of a medication that is already reducing intake — cutting carbs, skipping meals, or intermittent fasting alongside a strongly suppressed appetite. That combination can drive intake well below what your body needs. Talk to your dietitian before adding any further restriction.

When to raise it with someone

Struggling to eat anything for days at a time, losing weight far faster than expected, feeling faint or unusually weak, or being unable to keep fluids down are all reasons to contact your prescribing clinician rather than to push through. Nutrition strategy is our job; anything that feels medical is theirs.

The bottom line

Not being hungry is not the same as not needing food. When the signal goes quiet, the plan takes over — and the plan should be specific enough that you can follow it on your worst day, not just your best one.

Hydration During GLP-1 Therapy

Thirst cues can fade along with hunger cues. Why fluid intake quietly drops, what it affects, and how to build a target you'll actually meet.

5 min read Updated February 11, 2026 By Sustayn Health

A surprising amount of daily fluid comes from food — soups, fruit, vegetables, yoghurt, even bread. When you eat substantially less, you lose that contribution without noticing. Add a blunted thirst signal and days that get busy, and fluid intake can drop a long way below where it used to sit.

What under-hydration tends to affect

  • Fatigue and low energy that feels out of proportion to your day
  • Headaches, particularly in the afternoon
  • Constipation, which fibre alone will not fix without fluid
  • Dizziness or light-headedness, especially standing up quickly
  • Concentration and mood

None of these is proof of dehydration on its own — they overlap with plenty of other explanations, including simply not eating enough. That is exactly why it is worth ruling out the easy variable.

Building a target you'll actually hit

General fluid recommendations vary with body size, climate, activity and medical conditions, and some conditions require fluid restriction. Rather than adopting a number from the internet, agree one with your dietitian or clinician and then make it structurally easy to reach.

  1. Attach fluid to existing habits. A glass with each medication, each meal, on waking, and before bed.
  2. Keep a visible container. Out of sight genuinely is out of mind when thirst is muted.
  3. Count what counts. Water, milk, herbal tea, broths and most non-alcoholic drinks contribute.
  4. Sip rather than gulp. Large volumes at once can feel uncomfortable with early fullness — and drinking a lot immediately before eating can crowd out food.
  5. Watch the hot days and travel days. Requirements go up exactly when routine breaks down.
A note on electrolyte productsElectrolyte drinks and tablets can make fluid easier to take in for some people. They also vary widely in sodium, sugar and other ingredients. Review any product with your clinician or pharmacist if you have blood pressure, cardiac or kidney considerations.

When to seek care

Persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, very dark urine with reduced output, confusion, or fainting are medical concerns. Contact your clinician or seek urgent care rather than managing these at home.

The bottom line

Fluid is the easiest thing to lose track of and one of the easiest to fix. Set a target with a professional, attach it to habits you already have, and treat it as part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

Preventing Muscle Loss During Weight Loss

Some lean mass loss accompanies almost any significant weight loss. Two levers consistently matter most — and both are within your control.

7 min read Updated January 28, 2026 By Sustayn Health

When you lose weight, you don't only lose fat. Some proportion of the loss comes from lean tissue — muscle, connective tissue, and the water that goes with them. This is true of essentially every method of weight loss, including diet alone, surgery and medication. The question worth asking is not whether it happens, but what influences how much.

Why lean mass is worth protecting

Muscle is not just about appearance or athletic performance. It is what carries shopping up stairs, gets you out of a low chair, stabilises your joints, and — as you age — is closely tied to independence and fall risk. It also contributes to daily energy expenditure, which becomes relevant when you eventually move into maintenance.

The two levers that matter most

1. Adequate protein intake

Protein supplies the raw material for maintaining muscle tissue. In a calorie deficit, protein requirements are generally considered higher than they are at weight stability — precisely because the body is in a net-breakdown state and needs more input to offset it. This is the same reason the protein conversation comes up so often on GLP-1 medications: the deficit can be large and the appetite for protein-dense food is often the first to disappear.

2. Resistance training

Loading a muscle gives the body a reason to keep it. Resistance training — weights, bands, bodyweight, machines — is the signal that tells your body the tissue is being used. Protein without training, or training without protein, is only half the equation.

You do not need a gymTwo or three sessions a week, covering the major movement patterns, is a reasonable starting structure for most people. Bands and bodyweight work count. Consistency over months matters far more than the sophistication of the programme. Check with your clinician before starting a new exercise programme if you have cardiac, joint or other medical considerations.

Supporting factors

  • Rate of loss. Very rapid weight loss tends to come with a greater proportion of lean tissue. Slower is generally kinder to muscle.
  • Sleep. Chronic short sleep works against recovery and against appetite regulation.
  • Total energy intake. An extreme deficit stacked on top of an appetite-suppressing medication gives your body little to work with.
  • Distribution. Spreading protein across the day, rather than concentrating it in one meal, is generally advised.
  • Everyday movement. Walking and general activity support overall health, but they are not a substitute for resistance work when the goal is preserving muscle.

How would I know?

Scale weight alone can't tell you what you're losing. Practical signals include strength in the movements you train, how everyday physical tasks feel, and — where available — body-composition measurement over time. Any measurement is most useful as a trend, taken the same way each time.

The bottom line

Some lean mass loss is expected. Eating enough protein and loading your muscles regularly are the two things most consistently associated with limiting it. Neither requires anything exotic — but both require doing them for months, not weeks.

Protein and GLP-1 Medications: Why It Becomes the Hardest Nutrient to Hit

When appetite falls, protein is usually the first thing to go — and the hardest to make up later. Here's why it matters and how to build a realistic target.

6 min read Updated January 14, 2026 By Sustayn Health

Most people starting a GLP-1 medication expect to eat less. Fewer expect how selectively they will eat less. Appetite doesn't fade evenly across the plate — for a lot of people, dense protein foods are the first thing that stops appealing, while softer, sweeter or more processed foods remain tolerable. The result is a smaller plate that has lost its most important component.

Why protein is the priority

Protein does several things at once during weight loss. It supplies the amino acids your body uses to maintain lean tissue, it is the most satiating macronutrient per calorie, and it supports the ordinary repair and immune functions that continue regardless of what you weigh. When total intake drops sharply, protein is the nutrient where a shortfall shows up soonest.

The other reason it matters: you cannot bank it. A day where you eat 30 grams instead of 100 is not something you make up by eating extra on Sunday. Consistency across the week is what counts.

How much do you actually need?

There is no single number that fits everyone. General population guidance sets a minimum to prevent deficiency, but people in an active weight-loss phase — particularly with a substantial calorie deficit — are usually advised to aim meaningfully higher than that minimum, with the target scaled to body size and activity.

This is what a dietitian is forYour protein target depends on your body size, your activity level, your kidney function, other medical conditions and how much weight you are losing per week. A Registered Dietitian sets that number with you rather than applying a rule of thumb from the internet.

Practical strategies when food isn't appealing

  • Front-load the day. Appetite is often best in the morning and worst by evening. Put your largest protein serving at the meal you actually want to eat.
  • Lead with protein on the plate. Eat the protein component first, before the volume-heavy sides fill you up.
  • Choose softer, moister preparations. Slow-cooked, braised, poached or blended proteins are often far easier to tolerate than dry, dense cuts.
  • Use liquids strategically. A protein-containing drink can be easier than a meal on a bad day — but as a supplement to eating, not a permanent replacement for it.
  • Spread it out. Several smaller protein-containing servings across the day are usually more achievable than two large ones.
  • Keep default options ready. Decide in advance what you eat on a low-appetite day, so the decision isn't made when you feel worst.

Signs your intake may be falling short

Persistent fatigue, feeling weaker in everyday tasks, hair shedding, slow healing, or losing weight much faster than expected are all worth raising — with your dietitian for the nutrition side and with your prescribing clinician for anything medical. None of these is diagnostic on its own, and none should be self-treated.

The bottom line

Eating less is the mechanism of the medication. Eating less protein is an avoidable side effect of that mechanism. Setting a target you can actually hit — and building a handful of default meals around it — is one of the highest-value things you can do in the first months on a GLP-1.

What Happens When You Stop a GLP-1?

Appetite returns. That is expected. Whether you have habits, structure and muscle in place by then is what changes the next chapter.

6 min read Updated March 4, 2026 By Sustayn Health

Any decision about starting, continuing, pausing or stopping a GLP-1 medication is a medical one, made with your prescribing clinician. What follows is not advice about that decision — it is about the nutrition side of what tends to change, so you can prepare rather than react.

Appetite comes back

The medication's appetite effect is not permanent. When it stops, the suppression stops with it, and hunger typically returns. For someone who has spent a year eating primarily because appetite was quiet, this can feel abrupt and destabilising.

It is also completely predictable — which means it can be planned for.

What actually carries over

Three things travel with you out of the medication phase, and all three are built during it, not after:

  1. Muscle. Lean mass you protected on the way down is lean mass you still have. It supports strength, function and daily energy expenditure.
  2. Habits. How you shop, how you assemble a plate, what your default meals are, how you handle travel and restaurants. Structure that never depended on suppressed appetite keeps working when appetite returns.
  3. Skills and self-knowledge. Knowing your protein target, recognising your own patterns, having a plan for a difficult week.
This is why the last phase deserves a planThe most valuable time to work on maintenance is while the medication is still helping — not in the weeks after it stops. Members on our most comprehensive membership work with their dietitian on a deliberate maintenance plan covering nutrition, protein, movement and monitoring.

Practical preparation

  • Establish resistance training well before any transition, not as a response to it
  • Know your protein target without having to look it up
  • Have five to ten default meals you can make without deciding
  • Agree what you will monitor, how often, and what would prompt you to seek support
  • Keep your dietitian and your prescribing clinician in the loop about your plans

Weight regain is not a personal failure

Weight regain after stopping a weight-loss medication is a well-recognised pattern, not evidence of weak character. Treating it as a predictable physiological event — one you plan around with professional support — is far more useful than treating it as a moral one.

The bottom line

The medication phase is an opportunity to build the things that don't disappear when it ends. Protein, strength, structure and skills. Have the maintenance conversation early, and have it with people who know your case.

What to Eat When You're Nauseated

Texture, temperature, timing and portion size all change how food sits. A practical guide to eating something on the days nothing appeals.

5 min read Updated February 18, 2026 By Sustayn Health

Nausea is common in the days after starting a GLP-1 or increasing a dose, and it tends to settle for many people as the body adjusts. While it is there, the goal shifts: not an optimal plate, just something tolerable, reasonably nourishing, and kept down.

The four variables worth adjusting

Portion size

Smaller amounts, more often, almost always sit better than a normal-sized meal. Think of it as several small opportunities rather than three obligations.

Texture

Soft, moist and smooth foods are usually easier than dry, dense or fibrous ones. Blended and slow-cooked preparations are often tolerated when the same ingredients in another form are not.

Temperature and smell

Cool or room-temperature foods release less aroma, and aroma is often the trigger. Many people find cold options far easier during a nauseated stretch.

Timing

Eating slowly, stopping before full, staying upright for a while afterwards, and separating large drinks from meals all tend to help.

Still aim for protein where you canEven in small amounts. A few tolerable protein-containing options that you can rotate through a bad stretch will do more for you than a week of dry toast.

Things that commonly make it worse

  • Large meals, particularly late in the day
  • Very high-fat or heavily fried food
  • Strong cooking smells in a small space
  • Lying down soon after eating
  • Alcohol
  • Pushing through a full feeling because it's 'mealtime'

When to contact your prescriber

Nausea that is severe, that stops you keeping fluids down, that comes with significant abdominal pain, or that persists rather than settling should go to your prescribing clinician. Dose adjustments, anti-nausea medication and any decision about continuing treatment are medical decisions — not something to work out through diet alone.

The bottom line

During a nauseated stretch, small, soft, cool and slow is the formula. Keep a short list of options that have worked before, so you are not deciding while you feel terrible.

01 Our approach Food first, always

Nutrition first. Supplements where they make sense.

Sustayn is a dietitian-led programme that includes supplements — not a supplement company with a dietitian attached. Every plan starts with what you eat: enough protein, enough fluid, enough of the nutrients that get harder to reach when portions shrink. Sustayn products are designed to help support the common areas of need when food intake is reduced.

Personalized Supplement Support Included Your Sustayn membership includes nutrition supplements selected to support your individual needs. Your Registered Dietitian will review your diet, symptoms, health history and goals with you and recommend the Sustayn products that best complement your nutrition plan. Your supplement package can be adjusted as your needs change.

Food first → assess the gaps → supplement appropriately → reassess as you change.

Food first, always

Your dietitian builds your plan around real meals. Supplements are considered only after we know where your intake actually falls short.

Chosen for the GLP-1 context

Selections are made with low appetite, early fullness and reduced total intake in mind — the specific conditions of this journey.

Included with every membership

Personalized supplement support is part of all three memberships rather than an upsell bolted on at checkout.

Reviewed with your care team

Bring your supplement list to your prescribing clinician and pharmacist. We provide clear labelling and usage guidance so that conversation is easy.

02 Selection How a product earns its place

Four tests before anything goes in the box.

It fills a gap we can actually see

Your dietitian reviews what you are eating before anything is recommended. If your intake already covers it, you do not need it — and we will say so.

It survives a small appetite

A product that is hard to take when you feel full is a product that will not get taken. Format, volume and taste are part of the selection, not an afterthought.

It is made to a standard we can point to

Manufacturing standards, third-party testing and label accuracy are part of how products are chosen. The specific certifications for each product are published on its label.

It has somewhere to stop

Supplements are reviewed at your follow-up visits. If something is no longer needed, it comes out of your plan.

03 The portfolio Four products

Protein Support

Powder

Sustayn Protein Foundation

Supports daily protein targets on days when appetite or early fullness makes food alone difficult.

Protein is the nutrient most likely to fall short once portions shrink, and it is the one you cannot make up later in the week. Protein Foundation exists for the days when a full meal is not going to happen — mixed into what you are already drinking, in a volume that does not fight a small appetite.

What it's for

  • Helps you reach the protein target your dietitian sets with you
  • Designed for low-appetite days rather than as a routine meal replacement
  • Mixes into a small volume, so it does not crowd out food
  • Neutral enough to use when strong flavours are unappealing

How it's used

Your dietitian will tell you when and how often to use it based on what your food intake actually covers. For most members it is a fallback for difficult days rather than a daily habit.

Foundational Micronutrients

Capsule

Sustayn Daily Essentials

Helps cover everyday vitamin and mineral needs when total food intake is significantly reduced.

Vitamins and minerals arrive with food. When the volume of food falls by a third or more and stays there for months, the amount of everything travelling with it falls too. Daily Essentials is the baseline underneath your nutrition plan — not a replacement for the food that should be doing most of this work.

What it's for

  • A consistent daily baseline while your intake is reduced
  • Formulated for adults in an active weight-loss phase
  • Small enough to take comfortably on a light stomach
  • Reviewed against your intake at every follow-up visit

How it's used

Typically taken once daily with food. Bring it to your prescribing clinician and pharmacist before starting, particularly if you take prescription medication.

Digestive Comfort

Powder

Sustayn Digestive Balance

Supports regularity and day-to-day digestive comfort alongside dietary fibre and fluid strategies.

Constipation is one of the most common day-to-day complaints on a GLP-1, and it has an unglamorous explanation: less food in, slower transit, less fluid. Digestive Balance sits alongside the fibre and fluid work your dietitian does with you — it is a support, not a substitute for either.

What it's for

  • Works with the fibre and fluid targets in your plan
  • Introduced gradually, the way fibre should be
  • Formatted to be taken with the fluid it needs to work
  • Paired with practical food strategies, not used on its own

How it's used

Introduced gradually and always with adequate fluid. Severe or persistent symptoms go to your prescribing clinician, not to a supplement.

Hydration & Electrolytes

Stick pack

Sustayn Hydration Complex

Makes daily fluid targets easier to reach when thirst cues fade along with hunger cues.

A surprising amount of daily fluid normally arrives inside food. Eat substantially less and that contribution disappears quietly, usually alongside a blunted thirst signal. Hydration Complex exists to make hitting your fluid target something you actually do rather than something you intend to do.

What it's for

  • Gives plain water a reason to get finished
  • Supports the daily fluid target set in your plan
  • Convenient for travel days, hot weather and broken routines
  • Reviewed with your clinician if you have blood pressure, cardiac or kidney considerations

How it's used

Mixed into water, typically once daily or as directed by your dietitian. If you have been advised to restrict fluid or sodium, check with your clinician first.

04 Questions Six answers

About the supplements.

Do I have to take the supplements?

No. Personalized supplement support is included with every membership, but the products are optional. Your dietitian will tell you which ones are actually relevant to your plan, and it is always a reasonable answer that you need none of them.

Can I take these with my medication?

Always review any supplement with your prescribing clinician and pharmacist before starting it, especially if you take prescription medications. We provide full labels and usage information so that conversation is straightforward.

When do supplements ship?

Shipments are prepared on a monthly cycle tied to your billing date. You will receive shipping confirmation and tracking by email, and shipment details are visible in your member account.

Can I skip a shipment or change what I receive?

Yes. Your dietitian adjusts what is in your shipment as your plan changes, and you can pause or skip from your member account. Your supplement package is reviewed at every check-in rather than fixed at sign-up.

What if something doesn't agree with me?

Stop taking it and tell your dietitian at your next visit or by secure message. Anything that feels medical — a reaction, persistent symptoms — goes to your prescribing clinician straight away.

Are the ingredients published?

The full supplement facts panel for each product is published on this page and on the label itself before that product goes on sale. We do not ask anyone to take something they cannot read the label for.
